Assumptions About B'nai Mitzvah *

Please discuss with your team the four assumptions that have shaped this project: Community, Meaning, Respecting the Differences Between Individuals and Families, Deep and Authentic Jewish Learning.
Your team should read over the summaries of these key assumptions, which you can find under the heading "What are your key assumptions?" on the About page.

At first, it might seem difficult to disagree with any of these assumptions. But the realities of congregational life are such that sometimes our assumptions are challenged, or, at least, called into question. So please consider:

To what extent are these assumptions shared by your synagogue’s leaders?
In what ways are these assumptions compromised or challenged by the way your congregation currently celebrates b’nai mitzvah and prepares children for this celebration?

The B’nai Mitzvah Revolution agrees to provide Active Learning Network congregations the following:

In-person and online learning and networking opportunities: We will host at least 3 webinars and one in-person gathering.
Networking and consultation: We will help to put participating congregations in Critical Friends groups and provide an experienced professional to guide and mentor these congregations around similar topics or issues.
Information gathering and sharing: BMR will share the results of its findings with the Active Learning Network congregations and provide in-depth and interactive learning opportunities around those findings.
Kavod: wherever and whenever possible, BMR will recognize, promote, and celebrate the revolutionary work happening in the Active Learning Network.

As a member of the BMR Active Learning Network, our congregation commits to:

Attend the in-person gathering (one or more members of the congregational team) at the cost of the participant or congregation (approximately $350 per person).
Participate in 3 webinars in January, March, and May 2013.
Actively participate in regular Critical Friends group meetings (8-10 meetings over 12 months). Meetings may be in-person, online, or on conference calls depending on the needs and locations of the participants.
Conduct individual work assignments between the Critical Friends group meetings.
Actively bring the conversation of revolutionizing b’nai mitzvah to your congregation.

Our congregation is in agreement with the above and is prepared to commit to the Active Learning Network through June 2014.
